Located in Venice along Abbot Kinney this “high-energy Mediterranean” restaurant features delicious food made from seasonal, local, organic ingredients. With two long communal tables in the main dining room and a uniquely made chandler – the place buzzes with energy during peak hours. Travis Lett, the young chef, offers an impressive menu of thin-crust pizza (think roasted baby artichokes, gremulata, parmesan – yum) and other fresh fare that keeps the crowds coming.

The German book publisher, Taschen, was founded in 1980 with the mission of making art books more affordable and lesser-seen art available to mainstream bookstores. Today the company has 9 retail locations that sell their beautifully designed books that capture”beauty, culture, and modernity” in locations ranging from Paris to Cologne to London to New York (S0ho) to Los Angeles (Beverly Hills and at The Grove). Chris Anthony’s latest show, Venice, at Corey Helford’s Gallery in Culver City depicts a civilation that emerges from the ocean. The icy pallate of greys and blues give the photos a dream-like quality as the citizens of a sinking city emerge.

Monocle Shop
May 12, 2009
In April, Monocle Magazine opened it’s second retail location in the Brentwood area of Los Angeles. Similiar to their first shop in Marylebone, London, the shop is quite small, merely 115 sq. ft., and features unique design collaborations (see below) as well as past and present issues of their esteemed magazine. Published by the Founder of Wallpaper*, Tyler Brule, Monocle Magazine provides a monthly briefing on the “global affairs, business, culture, and design” of the world. The design layout and the physical quality of the magazine nearly completely justify its hefty price tag ($10). I adore reading it and can’t seem to put it down. I can’t wait to visit their store stateside- although I feel Abbot Kinney would have been a more interesting place for them to set up shop. Regardless in this economy, trust me, Monocle’s next issue is one investment you won’t regret.

Art in the desert
April 22, 2009
This past weekend everyone made the trek to Indio, CA for the Coachella Music Festival. For the event many sculpture artists and architects were challenged to create pieces of art that would allow visitors to interact and better experience the space. Here are two that caught my eye:
Nearly 90 ft tall this bamboo starscraper created by Gerard Minakawa served as an impressive refuge from the blazing sun. Minakawa is the founder of Santa Barbara-based furniture bamboo company, Ukao, and is currently working with Aids for Aritsans in Bolivia to create new products with indigenous craftspeople. A great example of sustainable art, Minakawa donates all materials used in the creation process to Habitat for Humanity at the end of the show.
False Profit Labs is a San Francisco based company that creates science inspired artwork. For Coachella, they designed a piece which allows people to experience themselves in art. With a clip-on heart monitor the Pyrocardium amplifies and illuminates the beat and shoots flames from 12 ft tall pipes that pulsate to their heart’s natural rhythm.
DNA 11 House
April 15, 2009
Have you ever wanted a piece of art that perfectly captures you? DNA 11 has found a solution. This creative company will make a custom portrait from the customer’s DNA sample, allowing them to pick the size and style of the piece. They have expanded their offerings to also include personalized fingerprint portraits and kiss portraits. Recently they opened up a pop-up gallery in Hermosa Beach (218 6th St.) known as the DNA 11 house, as a place for people to view their work and better understand their innovative process of combining science and art. Although the pop up gallery closed in early April, you can still order art work as unique as you via their website.

Massive Leisure
March 27, 2009
The large scale color works by Massimo Vitali are captivating and detailed in their depiction of masses at leisure. With a technique akin to the Becher school, with students such as Andreas Gursky and Thomas Ruff, Vitali illuminates ‘the apotheosis of the Herd’.
Spotted at the M&B Gallery in Los Angeles.
