Japanese photography Shinichi Maruyama captures the unique and ephemeral interaction between water, black ink and movement. Using strobe light photography, he is able to capture images before the mind perceives them and create prints that are powerful and interesting.

Now that we have officially welcomed in the first day of summer, it is time to prepare for this year’s P.S. 1 Warm Up Party. Every summer the MoMA’s contemporary art outpost in Queens hosts a summer party on Saturday’s that is the closest thing you will find to an outdoor rave this side of the Atlantic (although I’m norave expert, so someone please feel free to correct me). Starting July 4 through September 5 the courtyard will blast with music from Reagenz toDaniel Bell aka DBX to Stars like Fleas. For $10 between 2pm-9pm on Saturdays, enjoy live music and experience the new “urban shelter” in the courtyard designed by MOS Studio, known as Afterparty. The outdoor art structures are shaped like conical, primitive huts that serve as a respite from the blaring summer sun.

High Line

The much anticipated high line finally opened on June 8th! Created on the skeleton of an old rail system, the City of New York and the Department of Parks & Recreation have created an elevated urban park through the Meatpacking District. NYMag did an incredible special on the architecture sights you can enjoy while meandering through the unique park. Enjoy!
Enter on Gansevoort and Washington.
The park runs from Gansevoort Street in the Meatpacking District to West 20th in Chelsea between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues.
Mast Brothers Chocolate

Brothers Rick and Michael Mast are the only bean-to-bar chocolate makers in New York City. Using single orgin Venezulan and Ecuadorian cocoa, they create magical, pure chocolate wrapped in beautifully imported Italian paper. They recently opened up a storefront at 105 N. 3rd Street in Brooklyn. Yummm…

The German book publisher, Taschen, was founded in 1980 with the mission of making art books more affordable and lesser-seen art available to mainstream bookstores. Today the company has 9 retail locations that sell their beautifully designed books that capture”beauty, culture, and modernity” in locations ranging from Paris to Cologne to London to New York (S0ho) to Los Angeles (Beverly Hills and at The Grove). With interiors designed by Philippe Stark, their slick stores and exquisite books are truly captivating.
On June 19-21, 2009 the website will be having a warehouse sale with many books reduced 50%-75%.

Previously I have posted about the talented artist Logan Hicks. This upcoming Friday (May 1st) Logan Hicks and Broken Crow will be putting on a joint show that will only last the weekend in Brooklyn. The show will be hosted at the former Hamilton Savings and Loan Bank (498 Court Street Brooklyn NY). Brokenhorse opens on Friday from 7pm – 11 pm and will continue 12pm – 6pm Saturday and Sunday. This morning I received the preview to the show and it looks wonderful!
I also love Logan Hicks’ take on Moleskins. Who doesn’t need another one?

An artisanal candy shop with outposts in Barcelona, Amsterdam, Tokyo, Seoul, and New York, Papabubble, is known for its yummy hard candies. A visit to the shop is well worth it, as patrons watch the chefs twirl, pull, and mix malleable candies of every color and flavor. The marvel is almost as gratifying as the sweets themselves.

Improv Everywhere is a incredible improv troop which stages “missions” throughout the country. Some of my favorite have included “grand central freeze” and “best gig ever”. Their most recent “mission” was a gallery in a NYC subway – true art!

Spotted: a photograph by Israeli-born artist Ori Gersht at the Angles Gallery. His work is a study of what results when two extremes collide.
I’ve also included his video art, Pomegranate, in which Gersht combines a scene similiar to one of Juan Cotan’s 16th-century paintings and a 1965 photograph of a bullet – see the beauty that results!
